Amaranthus is one of the Indigenous and Neglected crops selected by the project INCrease as relevant for the provinces of the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, and Mpumalanga.
On 21 November, the University of Zululand celebrated excellence at the annual Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence Awards. Among the distinguished awardees was Prof. Kolanisi, recognised for her outstanding achievements in innovation. Her pioneering work in championing and promoting traditional and indigenous foods received special acknowledgement, notably her research and product development involving Amaranthus, which now holds a registered trade secret. This milestone underscores the University’s growing leadership in indigenous food innovation and value-addition research.
